What it takes

Columbus County’s other five recycling centers take the same items. The Columbus County Transfer Station takes some paint, construction debris, and batteries.

Each item has its own rules. Check before you go.

Columbus County rules

  • Columbus County’s staffed recycling centers don’t take household garbage (food waste, diapers, paper towels, and the like); it goes to the transfer station in Whiteville. The centers are for county residents only, with no commercial waste, no U-Haul or box truck loads, and no construction debris. Bring help for heavy items: attendants don’t unload.Columbus County’s Solid Waste page counts seven recycling centers, and its map shows one at Evergreen, but its address list (revised Dec. 12, 2025) names only six, without Evergreen.
  • The recycling centers take mixed recycling (clean newspaper, cans, foil, plastic bottles and jugs, cardboard, and cartons), scrap metal, furniture and other bulky items (tables and entertainment centers taken apart; no cabinets), and clean pesticide containers. Lumber is limited to 10 boards no longer than 5 feet. Plastic bags, Styrofoam, pallets, liquids other than motor oil, batteries, and burn barrels or ashes aren’t taken.
