Each item has its own rules. Check before you go.

Hillsborough County rules

  • Bring a photo ID with your Hillsborough County address and a printed or digital copy of your current property tax bill showing the solid waste assessment. Batteries, paint, and electronics need only the ID, and recycling needs nothing. Businesses can’t use the collection centers.
  • Your yearly assessment covers 10 cubic yards of bulky waste and appliances (a loaded pickup holds about 2) and 12 tires, and the count resets Oct. 1. Past that, loads go to the Northwest County or South County transfer station or the Southeast County Landfill at the standard fees. Customer Service (813-272-5680) can tell you how much you have left.
  • Unload by hand and sort into the containers yourself: staff don’t help, no dump trailers, and you have to lift items over a 4-foot chain. Vehicles and trailers can be up to 23 feet long at Wimauma and Alderman’s Ford, 35 feet at the other three.
  • Tampa and Temple Terrace residents can bring household hazardous waste, paint, and electronics to the county’s sites free with a driver’s license showing their city address; for other trash, they use their city’s service (Tampa’s McKay Bay scale house, 813-274-8811; Temple Terrace, 813-506-6570). New Tampa is on county service. Plant City residents use their city’s options for bulky waste, appliances, and tires.
