Statewide rules
- Florida law keeps lead-acid batteries, used oil, large appliances, and whole tires out of landfills, and yard trash out of most lined landfills. Lead-acid batteries can't go to a waste-to-energy plant either, and a store that sells them has to take your old one as a trade-in.
- You can haul up to 25 of your own waste tires without registering with the state, and they have to go to a permitted tire processor or solid waste facility. Counties can hold tire amnesty days for residents, free or at a reduced fee, with the state paying the costs.
- Public used oil collection centers around the state take up to 5 gallons of used oil free from people who change their own.
- Every Florida county has a household hazardous waste program: a permanent drop-off, one-day collections, or both, and a few pick it up at the curb. Each county's page says where its hazardous waste goes.
