What it takes
It’s the only place in Madison County that takes tires, appliances, mattresses, electronics, used motor oil, and some batteries.
Each item has its own rules. Check before you go.
Madison County rules
- Pay in cash (small bills) or by local check with picture ID and phone number; no cards. Tarp and secure every load before you set out, as Georgia law requires: putting the tarp on at the gate doesn’t count.
- Up to 8 bags of trash can go through the bag side of the scale house: $1 a bag up to 33 gallons, $2 for bigger bags. Everything else crosses the scale at 3 cents a pound, $3 minimum, including furniture, mattresses, and TVs. No construction or building materials, burned waste, or free-flowing liquids.
- Scrap metal is free: tell the scale attendant and weigh it apart from your household waste. Appliances cross the scale and go to the metal pile, not the recycling center.
- The transfer station no longer recycles cooking oil. Take it to CHaRM in Athens, or cross the scale and pour it into the pit trailer.
- Keep Madison County Beautiful’s Fall Into Recycling day is Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026, 10 a.m. to noon at the Madison County Government Complex’s main entrance: document shredding (2 file boxes free, then $5 a box), expired medicines in their original containers, and shoes, clothing, batteries, ink cartridges, cell phones, and books. Its tire amnesties run through April and October: up to 10 tires free for county citizens, with no rims, heavy equipment tires, or businesses.
