What it takes

It’s the only place in Albemarle County that takes tires, appliances, mattresses, paint, brush, construction debris, used motor oil, some batteries, and some household hazardous waste.

Each item has its own rules. Check before you go.

Albemarle County rules

  • Only the Ivy center charges for disposal: trash and construction debris are $64 a ton and yard waste $58 a ton, with an $8 minimum, plus a $1 service fee for Albemarle County residents ($10 for everyone else). Bagged trash up to 32 gallons can go in the convenience areas at Ivy and Southern Albemarle with a $2 tag-a-bag sticker. Recycling is free at all three sites. The authority’s accepted items page still lists last year’s rates: $60 a ton for trash, mattresses, and construction debris and $54 for yard waste, with a $6 minimum.
  • Each spring and fall the authority holds free collection days at the Ivy center for residents of Albemarle County, Charlottesville, and Scottsville: electronics (by registration), household hazardous waste, furniture and mattresses, appliances, and up to 12 tires.
  • The McIntire Recycling Center, 611 McIntire Road in Charlottesville, takes recycling, food scraps in compostable bags, and cooking oil; it’s closed Tuesdays.
