Statewide rules
- Car batteries and other lead-acid batteries can't go in the trash in Virginia. A store that sells them has to take back as many used ones as you buy, or you can take them to an authorized collection or recycling site.
- No one may store or dump more than 100 waste tires on any property without a state permit. Tire shops, licensed salvage yards, and tire processors can store them, and your county's or city's center may take them. A 50-cent fee on each new tire sold pays into the state's Waste Tire Trust Fund, which pays for cleaning up old tire piles.
- Used motor oil and antifreeze from your own car go to a county or city center, or to a gas station, repair shop, or auto parts store that takes them, in separate sealed containers, never on the ground or down a storm drain. Drain oil filters and bag them; they can go in the trash.
- Every company that sells computers in Virginia has to let you send back its brand of desktop, laptop, or monitor for recycling at no charge, by mail or at a drop-off. Televisions aren't covered.
- Virginia's counties and cities handle household hazardous waste themselves: some run year-round drop-offs, others hold collection days, and some take only certain items. Don't pour paint, cleaners, or pesticides down a drain or on the ground. Each county's and city's page here says where its hazardous waste goes.
