Before you go

  • Residents of Roanoke, Roanoke County, Salem, and Vinton get 12 free trips a year (July 1 to June 30) to the RVRA transfer stations, for household waste under 500 pounds in a pickup of 1 ton or less with a Virginia license; a pickup with a trailer counts as 2 or 3 trips. Uncovered loads pay $25, and waste outside the rules costs $71.50 a ton ($17.88 minimum).
  • Rental trucks and other exceptions need a waiver from Roanoke County first: call 540-387-6225.
  • Roanoke County’s recycling drop-off trailers, at Glade Creek, Glenvar, Hollins, and other sites and at the Tinker Creek station, take mixed paper, cardboard, aluminum, and #1 and #2 plastics.
