What it takes

It’s the only place in Polk County that takes appliances and construction debris. The Household Hazardous Waste Facility takes paint, electronics, used motor oil, batteries, and household hazardous waste.

Each item has its own rules. Check before you go.

Polk County rules

  • The North Central Transfer Station is for Polk County residents in cars, small trucks, and utility or enclosed trailers; the landfill next door takes only commercial haulers now. Loads must be secured, the minimum charge is $10, and you can pay by cash, check, or card. From Oct. 1, 2026, household garbage and construction debris are $48.30 a ton, yard trash $38.33, and scrap metal $27.50.
  • No waste from outside Polk County is accepted without the county commission’s written approval.
  • County curbside customers can set out up to five extra bags of household waste four times a year, and furniture and appliances go out on a scheduled day once a month. Construction debris, tires, car parts, and hazardous waste are never picked up at the curb.
