What it takes

The North Central Transfer Station takes appliances and construction debris. The Household Hazardous Waste Facility takes paint, electronics, used motor oil, batteries, and household hazardous waste.

Each item has its own rules. Check before you go.

Polk County rules

  • The Northeast center is a pilot for Polk County residents with proof of residency, at a flat rate: $10 for a car, SUV, or pickup; $18 with a trailer under 6 feet; $27 with a 6- to 16-foot trailer; $5 a tire. No cash (cards and tap to pay), no commercial use or dump trailers, and no household chemicals, electronics, batteries, motor oil, refrigerators or freezers, oversized tires, or gas cylinders.
  • No waste from outside Polk County is accepted without the county commission’s written approval.
  • County curbside customers can set out up to five extra bags of household waste four times a year, and furniture and appliances go out on a scheduled day once a month. Construction debris, tires, car parts, and hazardous waste are never picked up at the curb.
