What it takes

It’s one of four Beaufort County convenience centers that take appliances, mattresses, paint, construction debris, and household hazardous waste.

Each item has its own rules. Check before you go.

Beaufort County rules

  • Beaufort County’s convenience centers need a solid waste pass, which only Beaufort County property owners can get, online. Attendants scan it at the gate, and each pass allows 3 visits a week, Sunday through Saturday. Renters get access through the property owner, who applies for the pass. Anyone in the county can bring recycling to the Shanklin and Bluffton centers.
  • Trailers are allowed only at the Bluffton, Hilton Head, Shanklin, and St. Helena centers, and no bigger than 5 by 8 feet.
  • Businesses and apartment complexes owned by businesses can’t use the centers; they hire a private hauler. Large items from those apartments can go to the Oakwood Landfill, 751 Strobhart Rd., Ridgeland.
