Statewide rules
- South Carolina law keeps whole tires, used motor oil, lead-acid batteries, large appliances, and computers, monitors, printers, and TVs out of landfills. Oil filters go in only crushed or drained, and yard trash can't be mixed in with household garbage headed for a landfill.
- Tires must be recycled. Every South Carolina county takes waste tires from its residents, paid for by the $2 fee on each new tire, and the store that sells you new tires usually keeps the old ones.
- Car and other lead-acid batteries must be recycled. Every county takes them, and a store that sells them has to take your old one back: a new battery carries a $5 deposit that you don't pay when you turn in the old one.
- In South Carolina, household hazardous waste programs are local: some counties take it year-round, others hold one-day collections. Each county's page says where its hazardous waste goes.
