McMinn County dump hours
This page covers the McMinn County Landfill and the Athens Recycling Center. The Athens Recycling Center is run by the City of Athens, not the county. Each one’s hours are posted below, with the rules that apply.
What to do with tires, mattresses, paint, and more
Before you go
- Every convenience center is open Monday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., and closed Sundays and holidays. The county doesn’t post where the centers are, so call 423-745-3244 for the nearest one.
Landfills
- The landfill charges by weight: $38 a ton for household garbage and for demolition debris, with a $5 minimum. A load of household kitchen garbage up to 260 pounds is $5.
- The landfill doesn’t take liquids (paint, solvents, or chemicals), asbestos, large logs or stumps, large construction debris, radioactive or explosive materials, medical waste, propane tanks or cylinders with regulators in place, or dead animals.
- The landfill has a recycling area, free to the public and open Monday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The landfill accepts cardboard, paper, plastics, scrap metal, used oil, aluminum cans, and car batteries.

Recycling centers
- The Athens Recycling Center takes hazardous waste from households only, not from businesses, schools, churches, medical offices, or contractors. An attendant must be there when you drop it off, containers must not leak, and they aren’t returned.

- The City of Athens posts the Recycling Center’s hours as 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday. The state’s hazardous waste page lists 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.
