What it takes

It’s the only place in Durham County that takes tires, appliances, and electronics. The Northern Durham Convenience Site and the Parkwood Convenience Site take mattresses. The Household Hazardous Waste Center takes some paint and household hazardous waste.

Each item has its own rules. Check before you go.

Durham County rules

  • The county’s Redwood Convenience Site at 100 Electra Road is closed for renovation. Use the Northern or Parkwood site.
  • The City of Durham’s center charges household trash by vehicle: $5 for a car; $10 for a minivan, small SUV, or a pickup loaded below the bed rails; $15 for a full-size van or SUV or a level pickup load; and $20 for a heaped pickup. Cards only, no cash. Recycling, appliances, scrap metal, and cooking oil are free. An uncovered or unsecured load pays $20 more.
